You have a one in forty chance of matching with a patient. It may take months or years for your HLA type to match with a patient.
In general, if you are between the ages of 18-44 and are in good health, you are qualified to donate. Our age limit exists because medically, donors in that age range have stem cells that are most likely to help the patient.
There are some conditions that make it so that you can't donate, such as HIV/AIDS, diabetes, a history of cancer, heart disease, or stroke. Learn more below if you have a specific condition that you have a question about!
The process of extracting stem cells is called apheresis. It's similar to plasma donation, and is a much more simple procedure than bone marrow donation. It takes about 3-4 hours to donate. It's not particularly painful.
